Don’t Smile at Me (2017)
Billie Eilish
Teenage singer-songwriter Billie Eilish grew up in Los Angeles with a family of entertainers. The daughter of actors Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, Eilish began writing and singing at 11-years-old. She released her debut single, Ocean Eyes, four years later. Originally written for her brother, Finneas O’Connell’s band, the song racked up more than a million plays on Soundcloud, turning Eilish into an internet sensation who was often compared to Lorde and Lana Del Rey. She signed to Interscope Records later that year, which re-released Ocean Eyes, as well as a remix EP.
Eilish’s first EP, Don’t Smile at Me, was released in August 2017. A collection of her previously released singles, the EP was critically praised for its minimalist electro-pop and mature songwriting. All songs were written by Eilish and her brother, who also handled production. Don’t Smile at Me began to gain popularity commercially after Eilish was featured on the 13 Reasons Why: Season 2 soundtrack, despite that single not appearing on this EP.
